DSP Spotlight
Vinton County - Danny Prater
I have been with SOAR for 4 years however, I have been a DSP for 15 years. Some of the toughest challenges we face as DSPs include, but not limited to ensuring the client’s health and safety and communication with clients when they are unable to verbalize their needs/concerns. During my shifts I try to include my client in the community and keep him as active as possible. Some may not know I am an old regular Baptist minister, father of 2 girls and papaw to Josie, Nash and Cash (due in September). Why do I stay with SOAR? SOAR is a great employer as they provide the necessary training to keep both the employee and client safe. They also offer competitive wages and benefits.
Athens County - Julia Ledsome
My name is Julia Ledsome. I have been with SOAR for 3 years. Some of the toughest challenges have been putting myself in the shoes of the individuals and understanding what makes them happy, learning their ups and downs, and helping them navigate through life. When I am at work, I try to encourage my individual to be active and enjoy the things that make them happy. I try to interact with them as much as they will allow.
Most people don’t know that I used to own a Dry-Cleaning business in Florida. I also love to travel. I have had the opportunity to visit Italy, Spain, and Croatia.
I love my job at SOAR. It is a good feeling to know that I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. The company cares about their staff and makes sure that we have the knowledge needed to work in this field..
Ross County - Steve Hill
I have been with SOAR almost 3 years. The toughest challenges we face as DSPs are learning to go with the flow and not worry about things I can't control. To keep myself motivated during shifts, I remind myself that I'm here for the clients.
Most people don’t know, but I've been in remission from leukemia for 6 years so far.
I stay with SOAR because I'm where I'm supposed to be and doing what I'm supposed to be doing
Jackson County - Sylvia Perry
My name is Sylvia. I live in Jackson with my two cats — Theo and JimBo. I have worked for SOAR and the same clients for the last 3 years. I have seen my primary client grow so much and experience many things. For me, the toughest part of my job is the frustration I feel that comes with people not understanding that my clients’ needs are different, but they can do just about anything! I stay with SOAR so I can see my clients reach their goals, and lead a happy life, which is something I am working towards as well. I have lost 60 lbs since November 2023. I have completed two 5Ks, and plan to do more.
